Favorite Photo Websites
Photo.Net — I can't think of a more helpful photography site than photo.net. I tend to steer photography newbies to the Learn section. In fact, it was Philip Greenspun's original Travels With Samantha site that first inspired me to put together a photography website, longer ago than I care to admit.
Mountain Light Photography — If asked to name a favorite photographer I'd quickly blurt out Galen Rowell's name. Sadly, he and his wife died in a plane crash a couple of years ago. But you can still view his work online or visit their beautiful gallery in Bishop, CA. They were amazing people and their influence was far-reaching.
PhotoSecrets — Talk about a perfect resource for photographers. The PhotoSecrets guidebooks reveal the best locations for photos (in Northern California and San Diego currently) as well as the best time of day to shoot at each prime location. Andrew Hudson's books are filled with great photos and equally worthy suggestions. And his companion website maintains that high standard.
Photo Traveler Publications — They are in the business of selling travel guides for photographers but they are nice enough make a good deal of information available on their web site. I've found their brief field notes section to be helpful.
California Photographers — Carol Leigh has an amazing resource for those of us in California (and it's got cool stuff even if you aren't local). If you want to know what wildflowers are blooming and where, this is the first site you should check out. And when Fall rolls around you can find foliage updates too.
The Light Room - This lab in Berkeley, CA is where I get all of my custom printing done. Rob Reiter does terrific work.
For research
National Geographic Traveler — My favorite magazine. Gorgeous photography and excellent articles. The mag is generally my first source of info about a place (I look through my own print copies of the mag but you can also find lots of good material on their website).
For sunrise/sunset computations — pretty self explanatory.
USGS Geographic Names Information System — great for looking up latitude/longitude of geographic features (as opposed to cities).
National Parks/Scenic Areas
ParkNet — the official National Park Service website. These pages provide phone numbers, planning suggestions, and tons of other useful information. The NPS sites:
Additional links for some of my favorite places:
Yosemite Links
Yosemite Association's Virtual Yosemite — Extremely high-quality webcam views of Half Dome. One from Turtleback Dome, the other from near Sentinel Dome. Wonderful for those of us who need a daily fix of Yosemite.
Yosemite Fun — Head straight to the photos page for a terrific collection of Yosemite scenics. And once you make it past the great photos you'll find lots of excellent info throughout the site.
Yosemite News and Discussion Forum — Good resource for up to date news tidbits about the park.
Yosemite Online — This is the Yosemite Association's website. It's nicely designed and has some good information. Even better, the site now posts frequently updated pictures of sites around the valley, provided by the folks who used to run Halfdome.com.
Yosemite Area Traveller Information — This site has a collection of info from a number of sources, mainly visitor information bureaus from surrounding areas. It has current road and weather info as well as anything you need to know to plan a trip to the park. The nice thing about this site is that it has info on a number of services (e.g., motels, events, etc.) located outside Yosemite as well as in it.
Banff
Banff National Park — The official Parks Canada site for Banff is full-featured and an excellent planning resource.
Mono Lake Links
Mono Lake Committee's web page — What better place to learn about Mono Lake than from the people who want to protect it? This web page by the Mono Lake committee is thorough, informative, and helpful.
Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve — Official California state parks page.
